Exams, tedium, social retardation...the life of a mature age student

Yes, for reasons currently unknown even to myself, I decided in late 2004 that I would get myself an edumacation and go to uni as a mature age student. I figured a whole bunch of my dope fiend friends had done it back in the day and got through all ok, so me being of relatively good mind would have no significant issues. And for the most part I am fine, but this is now mid year exam period and to be honest with you dear blog, I am finding motivation to be a lacking commodity.

I have pretty much read and read this stuff ad nauseum, and figure that it has to be at least somewhat stuck in there, but there is an underlying feeling that come 6.30 tonight I am going to look at this exam paper and realise that I know five eights of fuck all about human nutrition (despite watching every infomercial and cooking show on free to air TV)...

Added to this is the fact that a week ago, I received some DVD's from sherdog.com ( a mixed martial arts site) which contained 14 hours of fights and what not...and that has taken a lot of my time. If you asked me how many kilojoules in a gram of carbohydrate, I may stall before answering, but ask me whose bed Chris Leben pissed on in the first episode of the UltimateFighter season 1, and I will answer quick as you like 'Jason Thacker'.

What is worst about this is that by deciding at age 29 (now 30) to study, I resigned myself to working weekends for at least 3 years, possibly longer...and it is only now I realise how this has left me completely socially retarded. I went to a mall the other day, it was reasonably busy with stocktake sales and all, and I nearly had a freaken anxiety attack...I don't have a huge amount of friends I see regulalrly and I have no sociable hobbies...if not for the girlfriend (who is probably as juch to blame for my lack of friends as anyone in some ways...whole other story) and my dog, I would speak to almost nobody apart from myself on a day to day basis...there wasa time I use to be sociable and mixed well with others...it would seem that now I am either at uni with kids that I donb't want to speak to, or at home/work with adults I have nothing in common with...

Yep, mature age study...its a grand idea

A trip down the coast...

A couple of years ago, my folks moved down to a place called Victor harbor, which I like to refer to as God's waiting room. Average age in this town must be over 55, if not 60. As it is an hour or so away, and I am a busy man, I go down there pretty rarely, but yesterday I made an exception.
My old man has found his niche in the society down there pretty well...he wears socks with his sandals and all that, but he is also the local pirate DVD maker it would seem. He pulls this case out yesterday, looks around to make sure no one else has sneaked in, pops it open and goes "Now, you've got to keep this on the quiet...but take as many as you like, theres more where this came from." Never one to knock back free entertainment, I grabbed a handful and put in some requests for new titles.
I have no issue with the old man becoming a bootlegger, good luck to him, mans got to eat and all that, but I can't help but think that if the shoe were on the other foot, he would be kicking my ass.

As for my mother, she has become a lawn bowler...and anyone who has gone through the pain of a family member becoming a lawn bowler knows what I am going through. She talked for 33 minutes solid yesterday, without me or the old man saying a single word, about the game she had the day before and how she managed to pluck victory from the jaws of defeat all due to a late fading backhand (?)...the sooner dementia and she forgets who I am the better I think sometimes....

Delta dumps her mother...

"DELTA Goodrem has dropped mother Lea as manager and signed with boyfriend singer Brian McFadden's management" from news.com.au

Wow, she is still around...how long till a sex tape gets 'leaked'??

Get on board the bandwagon, its the Australian way!

Now, I am no authority on soccer, and have never, and will never claim to be so….however it would seem I am in the minority. Apparently, now that Australia is in the World Cup, the majority of the country is well versed in the round ball game and 'has always liked the game…'.
Well I am calling bullshit and have devised a simple test. 5 questions to ask anyone you see in a Socceroos shirt who a. Isn't ethnic looking or b Has an English accent.
Questions
1. Apart from Kewell and Viduka, name 5 players in the Socceroos squad.
2. What position do these 5 players play?
3. What club in the A League do you follow and who was their top goal scorer last season?
4. Explain the offside rule.
5. Name 3 clubs that Mark Viduka has played for.

Of course there will be many that know their stuff and good on them. But I'll bet my left nut that a huge amount will have no idea past question 1.

Don't get me wrong, I will probably be as sleep deprived as anyone on monday after staying up to watch the Australia v Brazil game...oi oi oi!
